Description The author’s interest in family and local history brought him to the Avoca Courthouse and its trove of invaluable information. What began as research into the history of the pubs and publicans at Landsborough grew to include the hotels and people associated with the liquor industry across the Pyrenees. An arbitrary area bounded more or less by the major centres of Maryborough, Beaufort, Ararat, Stawell, and St Arnaud, but deliberately excluding the hotels within these major towns was settled on. The work concentrated instead on all the smaller towns and gold rushes within this boundary. Nevertheless, over the date range 1846 (Lexton) to 2000, it has gathered the names of nearly 3000 people, nearly 300 hotels, untold numbers of shanties, and much related information. This publication relates specifically to the hotels in the area to the north-west of Avoca, from Barkly in the west to Natte Yallock in the east. The author would be pleased to receive any information relating to the project, including personal anecdotes and old photographs or sketches of hotels and streetscapes.
