Under the conditions of the Bridging Visa E, they have been denied permission to work and access income support and healthcare. Beginning in 1996 in Melbourne, the Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project has evolved into a service for these most disadvantaged asylum seekers. Through the stories of asylum seekers, staff and volunteers, Finding Shelter, describes the experiences of those with whom the Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project has worked, and the ways in which the agency has developed in response to their needs. Asylum seekers in the Australian community have been forced to live in desperate poverty. Excluded from government services, and often unsure of their rights, these asylum seekers have come to the Asylum Seeker Project homeless, with life-threatening health conditions, and even malnourished to the point of requiring hospitalisation. The Project has responded as a service to care for individuals, both in their need for housing and material support, and in their need for social connection. It has also engaged in advocacy for structural changes. seeking a system that will provide for asylum seekers to live in the community with dignity.
