Brunswick’s Hotels by Brunswick Community History Group

Description The first edition of this booklet coincided with the National Trust Heritage Week in 1991 which has as its theme Water and Wetlands. Brunswick has no wetlands but its hotels or “watering holes” have been an important part of its development. Many local political , social and sporting clubs have used hotels as their home base. The history of Brunswick is thus inextricably linked to its hotels. When earlier editions of this booklet were published, all the hotels, except one, were still operating. In the decades since, there have been many changes in Brunswick and in society generally. The factories and workshops whose employees patronised the pubs have disappeared from the area and numerous large apartment blocks have brought with them a new and younger population. Although the original buildings remain, many with heritage protection, several have been converted into apartments. Brunswick has developed a reputation for live music venues and pubs contribute to this. This booklet only touches on some of the many stories about pubs in Brunswick and their role as meeting places.
